Ashmira, Jessica, Johanna and Divya's Trash to Flash Learning Story

Learners: Ashmira, Jessica, Johanna & Divya
Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: Term 4, Week 6-10
Learning Area: iExperience - Technology
Learning Observed and Vision Principles
In the second half of Term 4, all of the OrmPS learners have been participating in Trash to Flash - turning old used items into something new and usable.
All of the LH1 learners began this journey by spending time looking on the LH1 Pinterest account. Everyone selected a category that they were the most interested in.
Ashmira, Jessica, Johanna and Divya all selected Girls Fashion. They were curious about making an infinity scarf out of old t-shirts. However, before they could make this, they had to go through a test run with the Design Thinking Process. As a group, all of the Girl’s Fashion and Pets & Animals learners made ladybug fridge magnets.
The girls then took the template we used as a larger group and the personalised it to their infinity scarf creation, demonstrating their capability with understanding the design process. Collaboratively, they shared this template and filled it in on Google Slides.

The Dog Show Play

THE    DOG    SHOW    PLAY
the street decided to have a dog show.Reader:One day,all the dogs in

Pepsi:Who’s going to be the judge?

Dermot:Let Biggles be the the judge,he’s the oldest.

Biggles:Certainly not,if I were the judge I wouldn’t be able to win the prize.

Dudley:Let Lulu be the judge.

Lulu:No,thank you,I wish to enter the show.

Dermot:Well, somebody has to be the judge,or we can’t have a show.

Pounce:I’ll be the judge.

Bertha:(growling)What! Who ever heard of a cat judging a dog show.

Scruff:Well, there’s no one else.   (turn page over.)

Reader:So Pounce was the judge.

Pounce:What’s going to be the prize?

Scruff:Let’s all give something.

Reader:Bertha gave a big bone.Dudley gave a can of dog food.Lulu gave a well-chewed shoe.Pepsi gave a ribbon. Biggles gave a food dish.Dermot gave some dog biscuits.
And Scruff gave a rubber ball.

Pounce:Very well, let’s see what you can do.

Reader:First they had a race.Lulu came first.Dermot was last. Then Dermot showed how he could do something no one else could do:he crawled under the railings.Scruff tried, but she got her head stuck.Bertha wanted to have fights.(she always did.)But no one was willing to fight her.
Pepsi sat up and begged.Biggles rolled onto his back and played dead. And Dudley fell asleep.

Pounce:Very good,Now, for the next part of the show ,I want you to tell me why you think you should win the prize.First,Pepsi.
(turn page over.)

Reader:Pepsi wiggled her bottom, and walked on his hind  legs.

Dermot : Oh,look at her! She’s like a stick of candy floss on legs.

Reader:Pepsi ignored him.

Pepsi:I should win the prize, because my owner says I’m both pretty and perfect.

Bertha:Yes,pretty silly and perfectly ridiculous.

Pounce:Dermot?

Pepsi:You can’t give the prize to that walking sausage!

Dermot:I am not a sausage!

Lulu:If he grew legs it wouldn’t be so bad.

Dermot:I’ve got a very fine set of legs, thank you.And I can see no virtue in racing around like an express train on stilts.I ought to win the prize because of my superior intelligence.(turn page over.)

Bertha:Superior to what?That’s the question.

Biggles:Superior to a cucumber?

Bertha:He certainly looks like one.

Pounce:Bertha?

Bertha:(growling)Because I’m as brave as a lion,I’m as strong as an ox,I’m as fierce as a tiger.I’ll take on any dog in this street.Who want’s to try me?Come on,you lily-livered lap dogs!Put’em up!

Pounce:Alright!Alright!Thats enough of that!Come on out,Dermot. No one’s going to hurt you.

Dermot:(from behind a dustbin.)If you ask me,dogs only want to fight all the time if they haven’t got much brain.

Pounce:Dudley?Dudley!

Reader:But Dudley just snored.

Bertha:I’ll soon wake him!Mind out of my way!

Scruff:Let him sleep.Pounce,I’ll tell you why he should win the prize.

Pounce:Go on,then.

Scruff:Well,he’s very cuddly.(turn page over.)

Bertha:(snarling)Cuddly!This is a dog show-not a teddy - bears’ tea party.

Pepsi:Cuddly! He could do with going to the hairdresser before anyone would want to cuddle him!

Lulu:Cuddly! He’s about as cuddly as an old sheepskin rug that’s been left out in the rain.

Scruff:Well I think he’s cuddly,I call him Cuddly Dudley.

Pounce:Lulu?

Lulu:I can run like the wind.

Pepsi:Oh,hark at her!Like the wind indeed!

Biggles:She thinks it’s a poetry competition.(turn page over.)
Lulu:I am full of grace.

Bertha:So that’s what she had for breakfast.

Lulu:I am streamlined and sleek.

Dermot:She means she looks half starved,I could play a tune on those ribs.

Bertha:If you could reach them.

Pounce:Biggles?

Biggles:I’ve got the great weight of dignity in my favour.

Dermot:He’s got a great weight, all right, his mother must have been an elephant.

Pepsi:And his father was a hippopotamus.

Biggles:Clearly,of all the dogs in the street,I am the most impressive.

Scruff:What does impressive mean?(turn page over.)

Lulu:It means that if he sat on you,he’d leave a big impression.

Dermot:If he sat on you, you’d end up like a dog shaped pancake.

Pounce:Scruff?

Scruff:Who,me?

Pepsi:Yes,you, there are no other Scruffs in this street.

Scruff:Oh.Well,I don’t know.

Lulu:I should think you don’t.

Scruff:I can’t think of any reason why I should win the prize.

Dermot:I can’t think of reason why she should win the prize, either.

Scruff:But thank you for asking me,Pounce.

Pounce:All right,now, all sit,and I’ll announce the result.
(turn page over.)
Pounce:The prize for the best dog in the show goes to our worthy winner… (pause for a great effect.)the one and only… Scruff!

Bertha:(growling)What! Scruff! If she is the best dog in the street,I’ll eat my kennel!

Pepsi:It’s not fair!I’m ten times better looking than her!

Lulu:But she is the scruffiest dog in the street.

Dermot:Why should she win the prize?

Pounce:Scruff gets the prize because she is the only dog in the street, who never chases cats

Candy Land Book .1 Adventures of Chocolate

Candy Land
So who ever gathered round to hear this story get ready for a great adventure. Of course i’ll start with my favourite, I mean our favourite.... CHOCOLATE.
So this is called the chocolate guiser. Let’s Start....
I was heading down the road to get some books out from the library when I saw a big sign for a colouring competition. I know it sounds babyish but you can win a luxurious trip to Europe. So I decided to enter. As I took one I realised how big it was. It was probably two A1 papers. But that coloring thing wasn’t the hard part. I found out you had to go to water fountain down town. As I headed towards the big statue of the famous Indian actor Shahrukh khan
I saw something different, It was like a big balloon. I thought I should check it out. So as I followed the balloon I saw everything change right in front of my eyes. The next minute I saw a humongous chocolate guiser. It was shooting up with chocolate sauce and sprinkles. I walked up to it and stared in amazement. I couldn’t believe that I had seen everything change around me. Soon I saw a little man roaming around as soon as he touched the hot melting chocolate it had turned into a nice long brick of chocolate. I had a big urge to touch it but I thought would the same happen to me. But still I mean it’s chocolate. Everyone likes it. Anyway once I touched it turned into something I was thinking about. I was thinking about my Tornado book when the chocolate turned into a chocolate tornado. Of course I was surprised but still I had to touch it.
I took a big piece of the chocolate and ate it. It was divine and delicious. I hoped that maybe it would make a big statue of me. So I started to think about it. As I touched the hot melting chocolate it froze and turned into a big statue of me. I knew that I had to take it back to my friends and family to show them the wonders of the chocolate guiser. So everyone be back next week and listen to the next story.

Ashmira, Divya, Jessica, Johanna, Jasonta & Aleena's Ko Te Pu Learning Story

Learners: Ashmira, Divya, Jessica, Jasonta, Johanna & Aleena
Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: 14.10.15
Learning Area: The Arts - Music (Preparing for OrmPS Official Opening)
Learning Observed and Vision Principles
For the Ormiston Primary School official opening the learners in LH1 had to learn a waiata with actions. To prepare for this, some of the NZSL Club members and Deaf learners spent some of their iBreaks working on the signs so they would be able to teach it.
Ashmira, Divya, Johanna, Jessica, Jasonta and Aleena all chose to lead LH1 in the song Ko Te Pu. The video below shows that they are developing their capabilities in both learning new signs, and communicating these to a wider range of people. All of these girls demonstrated curiosity regarding the fact that they chose to spend their iBreak time learning new signs and opting to have the extra time to prepare. They are also showing the at OrmPS we value the official languages of Aotearoa New Zealand, by honouring the connection to Te Reo Maori and NZSL in this song.
Evidence of learning
Next Learning Steps
  • Lead the habitat regularly in our practices.
  • Do an iExplore around other songs or poems that connect English and NZSL or Te Reo and NZSL.

Learner:Asmira, Cassandra, Jasonta and Sally.    Learning Coach: Margaret Patrick            Date: 24.09.2015
Learning Area: Science Narrative Learning Story
Learning Observed
These learners were part of the “Mythbuster” group for iExperience in Weeks 6-10.
They ”busted” the myths about everyday objects behaving in unusual ways.
They were curious and explored the  physical and chemical reactions that caused the strange things to happen. They practiced writing up the phenomenon using a scientific experimental method developing their capabilities.  In week 10 they collaborated to form a  group and they had to make their own experiment, connect with other research available and come up with a hypothesis as what they expected to happen, do the experiment and reflect on the actual outcome. Following this they were required to make a presentation to an audience of learners. This included: the actual experiment, explanation of any changes they made, review of their hypothesis, presenting their digital recording of their work and fielding answers to questions. They created a green lava lamp. They discovered that the separation of the oil and water relies on the scientific fact that water is more dense than oil.
Ashmira accessed all the materials for the group’s experiment from home. All of the learners could field answers to questions. They managed their time well and were ready on time. They decided to present their learning in a variety of ways including a slideshow and google draw.
Refer video link for background info.
Evidence of learning

Next Learning Steps
  • try out other experiments in a safe supervised manner
  • explore where this scientific phenomenon is used in real life activities
  • write a reflective blog post about your learning. Add a cross-section of comments from the other learners’ feedback during your presentation.
  • encourage your family to go online and read your blogs.
  • spend time ensuring all group members have a role during a presentation.
  • create a schedule for group members regarding responsibility for bringing various items to contribute to the group’s experiment.

Week 8 Blog

What It's Like being a younger sister.
I'm a younger sister I have an older sister
There are good and bad things about having an older sister

Good:
She can help you with things if your parents are busy
You get more attention (if you like attention)
Parents are more easy on you then your sister
You get your sisters old things (But not clothing)
They can really help in issues that they've been in
Even though you fight you always work it out

Bad:
They can be a bit rude
We get most of there old clothes and they get new ones
They get you to stay out of everything that is there's ( Or think is there's )
You can't really talk to them when her friends are around
When they know a secret they use it against you
They don't let you there device and they use ours.

So these are the good and bad things about being a little sister

Ashmira's Animal Habitat - Digitise It Learning Story - August 2015

Learner: Ashmira                                                                       Learning Coach: DWilkes
Date: August 2015                                                                       Learning Area:  Science
Learning Observed
This term the LH1 learners have been learning about animals, adaptations and habitats. Ashmira has been building her language and developing her understandings of the many ways the natural world can be represented.  Ash is very able to recognise that living things are suited to their particular habitat and can discuss the adaptations of many specific animals. She used her curiosity and creativity to research adaptations for the Penguin (Habitat).  She recognises that all living things have certain requirements so they can stay alive and could identify these in detail for the penguin.

Ash was fortunate enough to go on a field trip to the zoo where many animals captured her curiosity.  She used the learning from the zoo trip to create a creature using the www.buildyourwildself.com wesbite.  Ash also demonstrated leadership and supported many of the other learners during the process.

Ashmira  then needed to create a habitat that would be suitable for the penguin.  She opted for the ‘Digitize It’ option knowing that she wanted to design the creature habitat in Minecraft and demonstrate her capability at using it.  She went through a rigorous design process that involved connecting with information through researching to create a fact file on the penguin, drawing a draft diagram of what the habitat would look like and then creating it in a digital tool of their choosing.  Ashmira collaborated well- listening to other learners and asking questions.  She also used Tinkercad and other tools to design her habitat on the days she was without her iPad showing great resilience and a growth mindset. Ask her to show it to you!  When it was time to share their learning, she presented her habitat with heaps of pride and confidence to all of the Learning Coaches and learners in LH1.  See her assessment here.
Evidence of learning
Next Learning Steps

  • write a reflective blog post about the learning and share with parents
  • create a product of their learning eg. iMovie to show the habitat in Minecraft
  • create a more detailed diagram with labels that is represented in the final product
  • learn about the different species of penguins- do they have different adaptations?

Ashmira's Speech Learning Story - August 2015

Learner:    Ash                                                                        Learning Coach: DWilkes
Learning Area:  Literacy                                                                              Date: Aug 2015
Learning Observed
This term all learners in LH1 wrote a speech on a topic of their choosing.  Oral language is an important skill and Ash refined her knowledge of some language features to enhance both the speaking and writing of her oral presentation.  Ashmira’s speech about why boys and girls should be in separate learning spaces demonstrated her ability to be persuasive both through the content and delivery. Ash learned about emotive language features such as the use of adjectives; persuasive features such as rhetorical questions, repetition, quotations, statistics, contrasts and lists of three; and varied sentence structures like statements, questions, exclamations and commands.  She learned about the structure of a speech including introductions, endings, sequencing words and and how to make her point clear. Ash also explored how to creatively add additional details to make the argument stronger. This was based around the ‘hamburger method’ of speech writing.  I was so impressed with how Ashmira refined her speech through practice and responding to feedback- she was a winner in the habitat competition and did a great job at our first annual school competition.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Ash cultivated the curiosity of others with her speech on boys and girls being together for their learning- she made everyone wonder if this would be a positive trend in schools.  She connected with her audience using emotive language and confident delivery - in her hapu group and at the school competition. She collaborated with other learners while practicing her speech and responded to feedback and in discussing, writing and providing feedback and feed forward to the other learners when they presented their speech or poem.  Her public speaking capability has grown as a result of this experience. We were very proud of Ash representing us- the Pukekos- at the Speech Finals- she is a real asset to our OrmPS whanau.  Ka Pai!
Next Learning Steps
  • write a reflective blog post
  • embed the oral rubric into her learning pathway and a recording of your speech
  • practice reading aloud daily
  • write what you think your next steps are in the comment section
  • future speeches will be strengthened by using some facts/research that has been done to validate what your opinion is and additional persuasive features
